Foamy Substance Washed On Mara Lake Beaches

August 30, 2010
Mara Lake / Hwy 97A Two Mile

Large quantities of white foamy substance was washing on Mara Lake beaches last weekend. This soap-like foam has been of dense consistency and omitted a notable odour in close proximity.

The white foam started to build up during Saturday, August 28, and intensified on Sunday to a point where the shoreline has been covered 2 feet wide and up to 9 - 12 inches high. During Sunday night it slowly washed back into the lake and mostly disappeared from the beaches. In the morning of August 30 only small pockets of foam remained on the beaches, while small patches could be seen 10 to 20 feet off shore.

This foam seemed to be concentrated in the subsection 2 miles south of Sicamous, stretching about 1.5 km south along Highway 97A. The north shore of Mara Lake seemed not be effected during the weekend.
Local residents have taken samples of this substance with the intend to have it scientifically analyzed. Once the substance has been defined, a further investigation will focus on the most likely cause and its origin.

The Ministry of Environment, Kamloops office, has been notified with the request to formally investigate this issue. At this time the confirmation from the Ministry is still pending.
